Knit your own Troika Wrap-around Faroese Shawl using these clearly-written instructions by knitwear designer Jackie E-S of HeartStrings FiberArts.
This knitting pattern makes a wonderfully simple and fun shawl that is shaped like a giant butterfly. Knitted in a “3-ball” garter stitch technique from the top-down, this is a great pattern for using a mix of novelty and “stash” yarns.
Shaping is done with simple yarn overs, and creates the traditional Faroese-style shawl with center back panel, side front panels, and shaped shoulders. The elongated front panels allow you to wear this shawl in lots of ways, including tied around the back.

34" long and 52" across at widest point as worn, 600 yards of each of 3 yarns in any combination of sport to worsted weight yarns. 3½ stitches/inch, size US 10 / 6.0 mm needles suggested. Knitting starts with just a few stitches at the top and works downward - - easily adjusts to other sizes by knitting to length desired, and other weights of yarn with corresponding adjustment in needle size and yardage. The red Troika Wrap-around Faroese Shawl was knitted in viscose/wool blend, mohair/wool blend boucle, and wool yarns.The other Troika Wrap-around Faroese Shawl shown in the additional images was knitted by Margaret Pittman of Heritage Yarns. She used one skein of Heritage Cotton/Rayon in color Atlantic Moonglow, 3 skeins of Heritage Cotton/Metallic in color Moonlit Sky, and some mohair/acrylic/wool blend yarn that was in her stash.
